The Federal government is providing $1.7 million to fund and artificial reef project in Miramichi Bay.
Artificial reefs are concrete blocks designed with openings at the bottom to provide shelter for species found on the ocean floor, such as lobsters, mussels and rock crabs.
It provides them a measure of protection when they are young and most at risk of being eaten.
The goal is to make the area more productive for lobster fishing.
Around 40,000 artificial reef units will be installed.
